Basic Info
Name:Pein
Bio
Pein
Pein’s personality can vary wildly from day to day. He can go from being strikingly friendly to downright frightening, and there is usually little way to predict what sort of mood he will wake up in, unless you know exactly what signs to look for and how to read them. Pein in a good mood can be a little offsetting at first to anyone who’s known him for a while, as it can be a little weird to hear him laugh and see him smile and crack jokes. He also brings this face out for diplomatic meetings, with a hint of seriousness when need be, for the best of relations between other villages and cities. Luckily for most, the most common of moods are his pensive days, marked by a tendency to be curt and formal. Calm and thoughtful, he spends most of these days by himself. Heaven forbid that you catch him on a bad day, when there’s little to contain his rage, and you’d best say your prayers if you irritate him on one such day. When angered, he can turn murderous and sadistic to those around them, and any little irritation will set him off.

The only common string between these different moods is that he is easy to anger if you push the wrong buttons, and once Pein is angry…he’s angry, and people will be maimed, if not entirely murdered. He’s able to contain himself a little better in front of anyone important, lest he give himself and Akatsuki’s secrets away, but alone, with those who don’t matter is another story. These are most certainly his true colors, no matter what kind of day you might catch him on.

Only one person is exempt from his wrath and has the ability to stop him from going insane. Konan, his childhood friend, is the only one that he doesn’t unleash his wrath upon. He considers her special to him, and the only one to understand him. As far as he knows, she is the only one who can read his moods beforehand, as she has known him the longest.
Pein’s most marked ability is a sort of magic he has been developing himself. Once he’s defeated an enemy, so long as they are only near death and not actually dead, he can magically suspend their body in a state of paralysis. From there, he can heal the body, although its original owner is no longer in control of it. At a later date, he can use these bodies as extensions of his own, like puppets without strings, and he is able to see through all of their perspectives at once—similar to mobile security cameras. The downside to this technique is that he has not yet figured a quick way to inhabit these bodies, and it can take anywhere from one to ten hours to inhabit them, depending on how many he’s using at once, so he can not change bodies on the fly. Once he is in the bodies, there is no known way to get him to release them unless he chooses to, although if the body is destroyed, then he can no longer use it. In addition, the bodies he keeps require constant upkeep and maintenance to keep to keep them from completely deteriorating.

The power source of this ability is his Rin’negan, a special trait with which he was born. In addition to allowing him to inhabit these bodies, he has the ability to use any elemental spell that he can get his hands on to learn. Using this ability, however, can be a great drain on his mana.

In addition, Pein has a tight control of the weather in Ame, choosing to keep a steady rain pouring down, stopping the rain only when absolutely necessary. Sometimes, minor changes in the weather can be an indicator of his mood—thunder and lightning to indicate a bad news, drizzle to indicate a happy mood, and so on. This ability is limited to the area surrounding Ame.
Pein remembers very little of his childhood, and even fewer specific details. He knows that he did not always go by the name Pein but was once called Nagato, and that he was once the son to a middle class family, not a mage family in any form, and that they were happy for quite a while, despite the incessant rain that fell in their home village. But that didn’t last for long. Civil war broke out when he was only six, and his parents were killed. He was able to escape with two of his childhood friends—Konan and Yahiko—who had lost their parents as well. Forced to fend for themselves, they were soon found by a trio of ninja from Konoha, one of which took the three in and watched after them until they could fend for themselves.

That day never came. Instead, one evening, he snuck out of where they were staying, following behind Yahiko. They didn’t expect to run into a much stronger mage who didn’t hesitate to attack him. It was then that Nagato awakened the latent magical ability dormant in his peculiar eyes, using it to conjure a strong magic that he was unable to produce later on, whether they returned to their caretakers. But from thereon, the three were taken in as students and taught the ways of a mage, learning to draw forth their abilities, as well as when and where to use magic appropriately. But Nagato suffered in his studies, because his body could not handle the strain that the Rin’negan placed on it, and he had always been a frail child to begin with. He could be so much more, if only he could have a stronger bodies, like his friends Konan and Yahiko.

There’s a period of time that is a total blur for Pein. Something happened to Yahiko, but what he’s not sure—some say that Nagato killed Yahiko, other that Yahiko was murdered by someone else altogether—and in the end, Nagato was in possession of Yahiko’s body, leaving his older, frail one behind. They were discharged from the care of the mage he had been trained by, although whether this came before or after Yahiko’s death is another mystery lost to the ages.

All he knows is that after that, he was on his own, and gave Konan the option to follow him. He no longer knew what to call himself, some weird amalgam of Yahiko and Nagato, and took the name Pein—in reference to all the pain and suffering that the three had endured together. From there, he returned to Ame, having manifested a bitterness in his heart for the village, and single-handedly defeated its leader, Hanzo, years after the man started the war that killed Nagato’s family. Once Hanzo was defeated, Pein systematically killed off everyone related to the Salamander: family, friends, the families of his friends, and so on. He led a revolution in Ame, of one faction against another, and now rules the village with an iron fist.

But soon Pein grew restless. He’d had a taste of power, and the sudden surge had him addicted. He wanted more, but how could he get it? Ame was not a mage village by nature, and to teach every citizen would take far too much time. He needed a quicker way. His break came in the form of the Pure Ones. They had already been sealed away into nine human vessels by the time he got wind of their power, but how much difference could there be, drawing out regular souls, drawing out powerful souls? An entire year he spent cooped up in his study, researching everything he could on the subject, taking breaks only for food and other necessities.

A year later, he emerged with a plan.

It started with the reformation of Ame. He needed to turn its citizens into respectable people, and with the grip he had on the village, it was not hard to turn the people’s attitudes around with a firm “proposal”. But overall, most people were not opposed to playing nice and getting along. After all, nobody liked war, and with the quick reform, the villagers started to revere Pein as something of a higher power, as if no one but god could have done such a thing. That was part one.

Part two was setting up a group of elites to do his bidding for him. Only the toughest would do, and he collected some of the most nefarious criminals for countries far away. No one in the five villages would have heard of these men—more monsters than anything, actually—coming from so far away. With them, he established a group, dubbed the Akatsuki, pitched to his own village and the ones around him as merely an guard unit, his own personal bodyguards if they would. In actuality, they are researching for him, using their individual skills to build the organization into something greater.

No one seems to remember the Nagato of old, and his plan has so far gone off without a hitch. Up until recently, it has been a game of watching and waiting, researching and reevaluating. Planning for when they will strike. But the day will come soon, and when that happens, Pein plans to turn the whole world upside down.
